Sandy Bottoms

An eclectic new store featuring everything from sun glasses, beach toys, snacks and drinks to locally made jewelry, hand-carved furniture and an art gallery has opened at Navarre Beach.

Whimsically named “Sandy Bottoms”, the store opened in late May at the site of a former Tom Thumb convenience store at 8228 Gulf Boulevard on the island.

The store also sells bait and tackle and features a small griddle with light fare. A small kiosk with New Orleans shaved ice serves the walk-up crowd.

The store was opened by Navarre Realtor Dorothy Slye whose mother owned the first gift shop in Navarre Beach in the 1960s.

Navarre Beach Pier

Work has begun on the long-awaited new fishing pier at Navarre Beach to replace the previous pier destroyed in 2004 by Hurricane Ivan.

The first piling was put into the ground in May 7 and the pier is expected to open in late Spring 2010.

The $8.43 million pier features an octagonal end design with 3800 feet of space and a deck height of 30 feet above water. The wood decking is designed to break away in the event of future storms leaving the infrastructure in place. Follow the pier’s progress at http://www.co.santa-rosa.fl.us/navarre/pier.html

Pavilion Rental

Need to find space for a beach wedding, company picnic or family reunion? The Navarre Beach County Park features four covered picnic areas and 11 gazebos available for reservation.

Larger pavilions rent for $50 plus tax while the smaller gazebos start at $25.

The park features 300 parking spaces, restrooms, beach walkovers and outdoor showers.
