Science by the Sea Summer Camp 2012
Science by the Sea Summer Camp 2012 Themes
Inside Out Invertebrates
June 18-22
Campers will learn about marine invertebrates from the inside out as we conduct dissections, hatch brine shrimp, and classify organisms. We will also spend plenty of time outside the lab exploring nearby ecosystems through kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, and field studies.
Dive into the Ocean Zones
July 2-6
Join us as we tour the zones of the ocean from the sunlight epipelagic to the mysterious hadalpelagic. In addition to studying the deep sea, learning all about SCUBA, and doing dissections (older group), we will spend plenty of time outside the lab exploring nearby ecosystems through kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, and field studies.
Note: K-2 program is a half day class and does not include kayaking
Habitat is Where it’s At
July 30-Aug 3
Learn about current research and use sampling equipment to collect animals and investigate their unique adaptations to life in various habitats. Activities include dissections (older group) scavenger hunts, fossil digs, and labs. We will spend plenty of time outside the lab exploring nearby ecosystems through kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, and field studies.
Fins and Flippers
Aug 6-10
Explore the diversity of our local sea turtles and marine mammals. If you love sea turtles or dolphins, this is the week for you! Students will role play as part of our local rescue teams and experience sea turtle and dolphin rescues and releases. We will spend plenty of time outside the lab exploring nearby ecosystems through kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, and field studies.
Note: K-2 program is a half day class and does not include kayaking
Spring Break Camp 2012
We are so excited for Summer Camp that we just can't wait until summer! This year we are offering a brand new Spring Break Camp for elementary age students grades 3-5. Campers will experience marine science through hands-on activities, crafts, and exploration of our local watershed. A break from school doesn't have to mean a break from learning. Through these fun activities, we will discover how ocean animals live in their habitat. We will meet daily at the station from 9-12pm.
The Navarre Beach Marine Science Station is happy to offer our fourth year of summer camp. Our camps allow kids to grow up learning about the Gulf of Mexico.Science by the Sea! camp sessions emphasize marine science and coastal ecology while nurturing the curiosity and stewardship potential in each child. We offer informal, field oriented, memorable camp experiences that balance detailed study with exploration. Using elements of environmental and experiential education as well as creative arts, each session is tailored to meet the learning stages and styles of kids’ grades 3-5 and 6-8.
Low student to staff ratios ensure personal attention and safety for your camper. Summer camp staff includes highly qualified Santa Rosa County School District teachers and well trained student assistants who previously attended classes at the station. Camp sessions are high energy, and lots of fun!
Do sessions change from one year to the next? Although we swap new activities for old ones each year, the backbone of each session is a collection of explorations in the coastal outdoors. Field and lab activities vary slightly each year. We tailor key concepts in marine science and coastal ecology to camper academic level and attention spans. If you have any questions about session content, please contact Charlene Mauro, Project Director, at mauroc@mail.santarosa.k12.fl.us
